Impact Virginia A NOAA snowfall map depicting accumulation in Virginia, after the North American blizzard of 1996. Along with the March Superstorm of 1993 and the January 2016 United States blizzard, it is one of only three snowstorms to receive the top rating of 5, or "Extreme", on the Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale (NESIS). It was followed by another storm, an Alberta Clipper, on January 12, then unusually warm weather and torrential rain which caused rapid melting and river flooding in the Northeast Floods later that month. This storm was a classic example of a nor'easter, but the storm would not have been as historically significant without the presence of the arctic high pressure system located to the north of New York. The City University of New York reported that the storm "dropped 20 inches of snow, had wind gusts of 50 mph and snow drifts up to 8 feet high." The North American blizzard of 1996 was a severe nor'easter that paralyzed the United States East Coast with up to 4 feet (1.2 m) of wind-driven snow from January 6 to January 8, 1996. Though the snowfall totals didn't set records even in the hardest-hit areas, it was so heavy a foot and a half felt more like 3 feet. But temperatures plunged, meaning roads could be icy in spots Wednesday, especially in areas that got more snow. While the gusts lingered well into the late morning and early afternoon, any lingering snow had turned to sporadic flakes overnight, following Tuesday's steady, consistent snowfall. The Jersey Shore, entirely bereft of snow from the latest storm, saw some of the most intense gusts Tuesday, topping 50 mph. It comes after gusts of 40-50 mph pummeled coastal areas in New Jersey, Connecticut and on Long Island overnight. The strongest nor'easter of the season besieged the tri-state with wave after wave of snow and/or rain (depending on your location) over the course of a roughly 36-hour period that only began to wrap up early Wednesday after dumping nearly a foot and a half of snow on parts of New York - and a scrape of slush, or less, in others. ![]()
